Australia’s peak automotive body, the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI), is urging greater attention to safety when using off-road vehicles after several tragic accidents during the December-January holiday period.
With all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) and side-by-side vehicles (SSVs) widely used across Australia—particularly in agriculture and recreation—FCAI is reinforcing the need for proper training, safety awareness, and responsible operation. The organisation is encouraging riders and operators to visit www.sidebysidesafety.com.au for detailed information on the safe and effective use of these vehicles.
The Importance of Off-Road Vehicle Safety
FCAI Chief Executive Tony Weber highlighted the crucial role that ATVs and SSVs play in industries such as farming, but also emphasised the need for safety precautions.
“All over Australia, ATVs and SSVs are used as versatile ‘tools of trade’ and can be an important part of farm machinery,” Weber said. “Regardless of how, where, and when they are used, recognition and application of safety procedures remain critical.”
The FCAI is particularly concerned about younger riders and their exposure to unsafe riding practices. “It is especially important to supervise younger riders and ensure they only ride age-appropriate vehicles while wearing the correct safety equipment,” Weber added. “Older drivers should also review safety protocols and assess the operating conditions before using these vehicles.”
Weber stressed that many incidents are preventable if the vehicles are driven according to the conditions and all safety measures are followed.
Safety Guidelines for ATVs and SSVs
To support safety efforts, FCAI has outlined key safety guidelines for operating Side-by-Side Vehicles (SSVs) and All-Terrain Vehicles (ATVs):
Side-by-Side Vehicle (SSV) Safety
- Operators should be at least 16 years old and ideally hold a valid driver’s licence.
- Passengers must be tall enough to fit the seat belt properly, brace themselves if needed, and be able to place both feet firmly on the floor while holding onto a hand grip.
- Never carry more passengers than there are seats, and never allow passengers in the cargo area.
- Wear a helmet, eye protection, and protective gear at all times.
- Keep doors and side nets closed, and ensure all body parts remain inside the vehicle while in motion.
- Never drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
- Stick to off-road areas and avoid driving on sealed roadways where these vehicles are not designed to operate safely.
All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV) Safety
- Riders must be at least 16 years old to operate an adult-size ATV.
- Always wear a helmet, eye protection, and other protective gear to minimise injury risks.
- Never carry passengers on a single-seat ATV, as they are designed for one rider only.
- Get proper training and follow the manufacturer’s safety guidelines and warning labels.
- Avoid overloading the vehicle and be extra cautious on steep or uneven terrain.
A Continued Focus on Safety
FCAI’s call for safety awareness follows an ongoing effort to reduce off-road vehicle incidents through education, training, and responsible operation. As demand for these vehicles grows, ensuring rider responsibility remains a key priority to prevent unnecessary injuries and fatalities.
