Climbing into the 48X can be a bit daunting if you’re used to passenger vehicles like I am, but the ergonomics and ingress design make the transition surprisingly smooth. With strategically placed grab handles, corrosion-resistant aluminium steps, and a wide door opening, you feel in control before you even touch the wheel.
Driver trainer Michael Di Ramio from Penske was on hand to run through the pre-start and explain the 48X’s driver assistance systems. Once on the road, it quickly became apparent that the technology baked into this truck sets a new benchmark for safety and ease of use.
On the Road – Linehaul with Luxury
The test route took us through Sydney traffic, down the M1 to Wollongong, and back up Mount Ousley—a notorious hill for truckies and a perfect proving ground.
Under the bonnet, we had the Detroit DD16 pumping out 600hp and up to 2,050 lb-ft of torque, paired with the Detroit DT12 OVX 12-speed automated manual transmission. This isn’t just any powertrain; it’s a smooth, synchronised system that felt more like a high-performance SUV than a prime mover. From the moment we hit the motorway, the DD16 pulled confidently and effortlessly, managing grades and freeway speeds with complete ease—even with a loaded trailer in tow.
When descending Mount Ousley, the descent control system came into its own. Like cruise control in reverse, you simply select the desired speed and the engine braking system takes over—adjusting revs and transmission shifts to maintain a consistent pace without driver input. It’s not just easy; it’s intelligent.
The Safety Systems – Smart Trucks Make Safer Roads
Western Star has kitted out the 48X with the Detroit Assurance suite of safety tech, and it really shows. Adaptive cruise control, Active Brake Assist 5, lane departure warning, and side guard assist (not on the model I tested) all work together to make the truck smarter—and the driver safer.
In urban traffic, radar systems monitor the vehicle ahead, measuring distance and speed. If you get too close, the system issues warnings and can apply braking if necessary. These aren’t just bells and whistles—they’re essential tools in reducing fatigue and avoiding incidents.
The lane departure warning system deserves special mention. Instead of a jarring beep, the alert comes through the left or right speaker depending on which way you’re drifting which happens when fatigue kicks in. It’s subtle, effective, and smart.
Cabin Comfort – Built for the Long Haul
Our test unit featured the 36” mid-roof sleeper, and while we didn’t overnight in the cab, it was clear that drivers spending days—or weeks—on the road would appreciate the space and comfort. Driver trainer Michael Di Ramio, who regularly uses this setup for training and travel, says it’s one of the most liveable sleeper cabs he’s worked in.
Noise levels inside the cab are impressively low thanks to triple door seals, Quiet Steel engine tunnel, and high-quality insulation. Conversation is easy, and fatigue is reduced—not just from quietness, but from thoughtful design. The wraparound dash keeps everything within reach, while the digital display cluster and multi-function steering wheel help you stay informed without taking your eyes off the road.
Three jumbo cupholders, optional digital dash, and intuitive switchgear round out the cabin experience. And yes, you can comfortably blast your playlist while hauling freight down the Hume.
