MAN Truck & Bus has unveiled a new heavy-duty tractor unit designed for the most demanding transport operations, expanding its truck portfolio with a factory-built solution capable of moving loads of up to 250 tonnes.
The new MAN TGX 41.640 8×4/4 heavy-duty tractor marks the company’s return to the “supreme discipline” of heavy transport. Developed as a series production model rather than a one-off modification, the vehicle is built as a complete factory solution for specialised heavy-haul operators.
MAN says the truck is designed to move exceptionally heavy loads such as wind-turbine components, large transformers, or even entire submarines. With four axles and a 640 hp powertrain, the TGX has the capability to manage complex heavy-haul combinations that can involve trailers with more than 30 axles.
Friedrich Baumann, Executive Board Member for Sales and Customer Solutions at MAN Truck & Bus, said the launch signals a renewed focus on specialised heavy-transport capability.
“With our new 250-ton tractor unit, we are returning to the supreme discipline of heavy-duty transport. Thanks to MAN Individual’s expertise, we are offering our customers a highly specialised vehicle that combines maximum performance, reliability and economy in one package,” Baumann said.
Built as a factory heavy-haul solution
Unlike many heavy-haul trucks that are extensively modified after production, the TGX is developed as an integrated factory solution.
The base four-axle truck is produced at MAN’s Munich plant before being completed at the company’s Truck Modification Center in Wittlich. There it receives specialised heavy-duty equipment including reinforced cooling systems, heavy-haul couplings, and additional hydraulic and diesel tanks.
The integrated design allows MAN to offer the vehicle with full warranty, service and financing packages normally associated with standard production trucks.
This approach also extends the manufacturer’s product range across a wide spectrum of transport tasks. MAN’s lineup now spans vehicles from light vans through to specialised heavy-haul trucks, covering gross combination weights from 3.5 tonnes up to 250 tonnes.
Powertrain designed for extreme loads
At the centre of the new heavy-haul tractor is MAN’s D3876 six-cylinder engine, producing 640 horsepower and 3,000 Nm of torque.
The engine is paired with the automated MAN TipMatic 12.30 OD transmission, which integrates a torque converter clutch to deliver up to 1.59 times more torque during start-up, helping the truck move extremely heavy loads from standstill while reducing drivetrain wear.
The vehicle also features a heavy-duty retarder braking system designed to maintain performance and thermal stability during long downhill sections or sustained heavy loads.
To optimise performance, the gearbox includes dedicated operating modes. A Heavy Transport program supports operations up to 250 tonnes, while an Efficiency mode targets lower loads of up to 70 tonnes with improved fuel economy.
Heavy-duty tower and hydraulic systems
A distinctive feature of the TGX heavy-haul configuration is the integrated “heavy-duty tower” mounted behind the cab.
This unit houses additional equipment required for complex heavy-haul trailer combinations, including:
- Four compressed air tanks providing an additional 160 litres of air capacity
- A 960-litre diesel tank
- A 290-litre hydraulic oil tank powering two-stage heavy-duty hydraulics
The hydraulic system can generate pressures of up to 300 bar and delivers oil flow rates of 20 or 40 litres per minute, depending on the steering requirements of multi-axle heavy-haul trailers.
A dedicated heavy-transport cooling system is also integrated into the tower to maintain stable engine temperatures during slow-speed operation under high loads.
Coupling systems for pushing and pulling
The truck is equipped with specialised coupling systems designed to support both pulling and pushing operations common in heavy-haul transport.
A JOST JSK 38 C fifth wheel with an 800 mm sliding mechanism helps optimise load distribution. The vehicle can also be equipped with a front register coupling with three height positions for push-pull operations, while an optional ROCKINGER rear coupling provides automatic locking capability on uneven terrain.
These features enable operators to handle complex heavy-haul configurations where multiple tractors may be required to manoeuvre oversized cargo safely.
First unit delivered to rental operator
The first production vehicle has already been delivered to BFS, a German heavy-vehicle rental specialist that partners with MAN.
The company plans to make the tractor available for heavy-transport operators that require specialised vehicles on short notice for particularly demanding projects.
BFS Managing Director Jan Plieninger said the new truck represents a flagship addition to the company’s fleet.
“We are very proud to have the very first of these special high-performance trucks in our fleet. It is the perfect flagship for our special vehicle rental fleet,” Plieninger said.
Global service and support network
MAN will support the heavy-haul tractor with its existing global service network, which includes around 1,670 service locations in more than 140 countries.
Operators can also access MAN’s digital fleet and service tools, including uptime monitoring, maintenance management and extended warranty programs designed to support vehicles operating in specialised heavy-transport environments.
The launch reinforces MAN’s position in the specialised heavy-haul segment, offering a factory-engineered solution for projects involving extremely large and complex loads such as energy infrastructure, industrial equipment and large civil engineering components.
For heavy-transport operators across Europe, the new TGX 250-tonne tractor represents a purpose-built option designed to handle some of the most demanding transport tasks on the road.
