Australian transport operators will soon have another option for deploying predictive fatigue technology, with WHG Technologies confirming support for Garmin’s new screen-free CIRQA Smart Band.
The wearable will integrate with WHG’s FleetPREDICT platform, which analyses biometric and autonomic nervous system data collected through compatible Garmin devices to identify changes linked to increasing fatigue risk.
According to WHG, the technology can alert a driver approximately one to eight minutes before a potential microsleep event, with validated accuracy above 90 per cent.
A simpler wearable for drivers
Unlike a conventional smartwatch, the CIRQA Smart Band does not have a display. It continuously monitors health data without presenting notifications, applications or other information on the driver’s wrist.
WHG Technologies CEO-Australia Dylan Hartley said the new device gives fleets greater flexibility when selecting wearables for different operating environments.
Some drivers may prefer the broader health and fitness functions of a smartwatch, while other businesses have asked for a discreet device focused on monitoring without adding another screen to the driving task.
The band can be worn on the wrist or with an optional upper-arm accessory. WHG says the upper-arm configuration could suit operations where wrist-worn devices create snag, entanglement or workplace policy concerns.
This could include bulk fuel, dangerous goods and other specialised transport applications where watches, jewellery or wrist-mounted equipment may be restricted.
Fleet trials shape new option
FleetPREDICT is already operating with fleets in Australia, New Zealand and Europe.
It is also being evaluated through a National Heavy Vehicle Regulator Heavy Vehicle Safety Initiative-funded trial involving Linfox, Wettenhalls, FBT Transwest and Team Transport.
The CIRQA device was not included in the existing trial because it has only recently been launched. However, WHG said its screen-free design and alternative wearing positions respond to feedback gathered through the trial and discussions with transport businesses.
WHG expects the upper-arm configuration to provide the biometric monitoring needed by FleetPREDICT, although the company plans to validate the arrangement as devices become available locally.
Battery life supports fleet use
Garmin’s published specifications state that the CIRQA Smart Band offers up to 10 days of battery life and weighs between 18 and 20 grams, depending on its size.
Health information, including heart rate, stress and sleep data, can be viewed through the Garmin Connect application.
WHG stressed that FleetPREDICT is intended to complement existing fatigue management systems rather than replace regulated work and rest requirements, driver responsibilities or an operator’s broader safety controls.
