Last month, Komatsu Ltd. participated in bauma 2025, the world’s largest construction and mining machinery trade fair, held in Munich, Germany. The event, which takes place every three years, brought together global industry leaders to present their latest advancements. Komatsu’s stand was a clear reflection of its focus on innovation, sustainability, and digitalisation, with a strong lineup of new equipment, electric machinery, and smart jobsite solutions.
Thirteen New Models Unveiled
At bauma 2025, Komatsu unveiled 13 new machines, with a strong focus on models tailored to European market needs. A standout was the PC220LCi-12, a next-generation hydraulic excavator featuring advanced 3D machine control technology designed to increase precision and efficiency on site. Its standard model counterpart, the PC220LC-12, was also on display.
Komatsu also introduced the WA485-11, a new-generation wheel loader equipped with a redesigned engine and enhanced payload performance. With a permanent payload of 8,800kg, the machine was developed for higher productivity and reduced environmental impact.
Alongside the machinery, Komatsu highlighted its latest digital tools, including Smart Construction, which provides jobsite visualisation and optimisation, and Smart Quarry Site, a fleet management system tailored to quarry operations.
Electric Equipment Takes Centre Stage
Komatsu’s electric equipment range was a major drawcard at the show. The company displayed five electric hydraulic excavators, ranging from compact mini excavators to mid-size models, as well as a prototype electric wheel loader. These machines reflected Komatsu’s continued refinement since their prototype debut at bauma 2022, now featuring improved charging capabilities and longer operating times.
In the outdoor demonstration area, Komatsu presented the massive PC7000-11E tethered electric hydraulic excavator. This ultra-large machine, with a 44m³ bucket capacity, stood at 9.6 metres tall and 9.0 metres wide, showcasing the potential for electrification even in heavy-duty mining applications.
Charging and Energy Storage Solutions Revealed
Recognising that electrification requires more than just equipment, Komatsu also showcased a range of charging and energy storage solutions developed in collaboration with global partners.
Highlights included:
- Megawatt-Level Rapid Charging Vehicle (co-exhibited with Dimaag-Ai, Inc.):
A four-wheel-drive charging unit capable of delivering megawatt-level power, offering rapid charging and high mobility on remote jobsites. - Battery Swap Solution Concept:
A system designed for worksites with limited access to fixed charging infrastructure, allowing operators to quickly exchange batteries and reduce downtime. - Flex Mobile Charger (co-exhibited with SBRS, a Shell Group member):
A portable 80kW charger that can be delivered to site by truck, offering flexible charging for machines in transit or off-grid locations. - Mobile Battery Energy Storage Systems (co-exhibited with MIDAC S.p.A. and Urban Mobility Systems):
These modular systems support a range of excavator sizes and are intended to stabilise power supply across diverse working environments, including areas without access to the grid.
Advancing a Cleaner, Smarter Future
Komatsu’s presence at bauma 2025 reaffirmed its long-term commitment to a more sustainable and digitalised construction and mining industry. By showcasing a cohesive portfolio of new-generation machines, electrified equipment, and power infrastructure, Komatsu demonstrated a clear roadmap to support customers through the energy transition.
While the machines captured attention with their performance upgrades and environmental benefits, it was the integration of systems — from Smart Construction to mobile charging — that highlighted Komatsu’s broader strategy: creating smart and clean future workplaces, in partnership with customers and communities.
As the industry looks ahead to a net-zero future, Komatsu’s bauma 2025 exhibit made one thing clear: innovation at every level — machine, power, and process — will be key to delivering on that vision.
