Mercedes-Benz has launched the Actros ProCabin in Australia, bringing an aerodynamic redesign, upgraded safety technology and several interior improvements to its heavy-duty range. The ProCabin replaces the previous 2.5-metre StreamSpace and GigaSpace cab options, while the 2.3-metre ClassicSpace and StreamSpace models continue unchanged.
Aerodynamic focus aimed at cutting fuel use
The main change is the revised cab shape, which extends the front by 80mm and streamlines the bodywork to reduce drag. Engineers have removed gaps and joints, reshaped the frontal area and added sail-style rear deflectors, a new roof spoiler and an under-cab spoiler to better manage airflow. According to Mercedes-Benz, this work allows air to move more cleanly around the cabin or directly into the cooling system without compromising its effectiveness.
Daimler Truck Australia Pacific President and CEO Daniel Whitehead said the development highlights the manufacturer’s ongoing focus on efficiency. “The Actros ProCabin is a shining example of Daimler Truck’s commitment to drive down fuel consumption through innovation and give our customers the edge,” he said, noting it also reinforces a commitment to “real-world safety with a remarkable active safety suite.”
Vice President of Sales, Marketing and Operations Andrew Assimo added that the ProCabin “extends our efficiency leadership through intelligent design,” acknowledging the current Actros already had a strong reputation for low fuel consumption.
Expanded safety package across the Actros range
All Actros models now come with the latest Active Brake Assist 6 package, which introduces five radar units that provide a 270-degree view around the vehicle. This supports improved function of Active Side Guard Assist 2 and is underpinned by an updated electronics platform capable of processing data 20 times faster than the previous system.
The additional radar coverage allows the system to intervene when turning left at speeds up to 20km/h if a hazard is detected, and it builds on the existing capability to brake for vehicles or pedestrians when required. The Actros can also be specified with Active Drive Assist 3 (SAE Level 2), which provides lane-keeping support using an electric motor on the steering box for finer control at low speeds.
Engine line-up and Predictive Powertrain Control
The ProCabin is available with the Euro 6 OM 471 (13-litre) and OM 473 (16-litre) engines. While both engines have received incremental updates over time, no engine-specific changes form part of the ProCabin introduction. The familiar Predictive Powertrain Control system, which uses GPS and topographic data to optimise gear selection and throttle use, continues across the range.
Mercedes-Benz notes Australian operators have accumulated more than 3 billion kilometres with Euro 6 (or equivalent) drivetrains since 2016.
Features tailored for local conditions
Recognising Australian operating requirements, Mercedes-Benz worked with Durabar to develop an aluminium bullbar compatible with the redesigned front and the new radar layout, ensuring cooling and sensor performance are not compromised.
The ProCabin also gains new LED headlights, with optional Matrix high-beam technology that can automatically dip the centre of the beam for oncoming vehicles while maintaining visibility to either side.
Interior improvements
Inside, the Actros receives full LED interior lighting, upgraded ambient lighting, improved gooseneck reading lamps, new bedside control panels, and additional USB-C outlets. A two-tone curtain has been added, along with an optional second fridge and revised seat-heating functions.
What the ProCabin means for fleets
For heavy-vehicle operators, the ProCabin’s introduction represents a steady evolution rather than a wholesale reset. The headline changes centre on aerodynamics and safety—two areas with direct operational benefits. Reduced drag supports lower fuel use, particularly on long-haul routes, while the expanded radar suite strengthens situational awareness around the vehicle, an area of ongoing concern for both operators and regulators.
With the bullbar integration and retention of the existing powertrains, Mercedes-Benz has signalled that the ProCabin is intended to slot into Australian fleets with minimal disruption while offering incremental efficiency gains.
