Senator Glenn Sterle delivered a passionate speech at the 2024 Road Freight NSW Conference and Awards held during July, highlighting the critical role the road freight industry plays in Australia’s economy. A long-time advocate for the sector, Sterle acknowledged the industry’s resilience and adaptability in the face of challenges like the COVID-19 pandemic, supply chain disruptions, and regulatory pressures.
He called for more government support to ensure the sector’s sustainability, particularly in relation to infrastructure development, safety standards, and workforce training. Sterle emphasised the need for investment in safer roads, improved rest areas, and better facilities for drivers. Additionally, he addressed the importance of attracting and retaining skilled workers, particularly younger Australians, to tackle the ongoing driver shortage.
Senator Sterle also recognised the growing impact of decarbonisation and the need for the industry to transition towards more sustainable practices. He commended the increasing adoption of electric and alternative fuel trucks, urging the government to facilitate this shift with practical policies and incentives.
