Truck sales slowed across July, after a strong H1 result that was just 1.3 percent down on the record first-half result in 2023. July is historically a slow month for truck sales though, with the end of the financial year playing a major part.
While 2024 is unlikely to deliver another all-time annual truck sales record in Australia; sales remain steady.
According to Truck Industry Council (TIC) data, total truck and van sales for July came in at 3897 units, for a total year-to-date figure of 27,972 trucks sold. This number is down 27 percent on June’s total sales of 5160 units.
Across July last year, however, total sales came in at 2732, down 35 percent on this year’s monthly total. Only time will tell whether sales pick back up across August, though.
Total heavy-duty truck sales for the month of July landed at 1251 units, for total year-to-date sales of 10,020 units – up 12 percent on the same month last year but down 36 percent on the previous month of June.
Medium-duty truck sales totalled 622 units, as the segment continues to lag behind light- and heavy-duty segments for a total year-to-date figure of 4659 – up 10 percent on the same month last year. Sales dropped by 35 percent compared with the previous month of June, somewhat mimicking the heavy-duty segment decline.
The light-duty segment remains strong, as the last-mile freight task continues to grow in Australia, with total July sales of 1147 units, down 27 percent on the month of June but up 7 percent on July last year.
