The New Zealand Defence Force will add 61 Mercedes-Benz Unimog vehicles to its fleet, supporting duties ranging from everyday transport and training to search and rescue and disaster relief.
Daimler Truck Defence has secured the order as part of a New Zealand Government investment to modernise the defence force’s logistics and support fleet. Phased deliveries are scheduled to begin in 2027.
The vehicles will transport personnel and equipment within and between military sites, while also supporting domestic humanitarian assistance and emergency operations.
The order continues the NZDF’s use of the Unimog, with the new vehicles intended to meet a mix of routine operational requirements and emergency response duties.
Daniel Zittel, Chief Sales Officer at Daimler Truck Defence, said the selection reflected confidence in the vehicle’s suitability for these tasks.
“The NZDF’s decision to select the Mercedes-Benz Unimog is a strong vote of confidence in the capability, versatility, and reliability of our vehicle,” Zittel said.
For fleet managers, the programme highlights the broad operational demands placed on defence support vehicles. The same fleet must handle scheduled training and transport work while remaining available for deployment when communities need assistance.
That combination makes vehicle versatility an important consideration in fleet renewal, particularly where emergency response forms part of an organisation’s responsibilities.
