Elphinstone Engineering has announced that its founder, Graeme Elphinstone, has been inducted into the Shell Rimula National Road Transport Wall of Fame. The honour recognises his lifelong contribution to road transport innovation and safety, placing him alongside more than 1,700 pioneers whose work has shaped Australia’s trucking industry.
The Wall of Fame, celebrated each year at the Festival of Transport in Alice Springs, acknowledges those who have made outstanding contributions to the industry—whether behind the wheel, in the workshop, or at the drawing board.
Five Decades of Innovation
Graeme Elphinstone’s career began in the early 1970s. From the outset, he applied practical engineering to real-world transport challenges. Among his earliest achievements was fitting Australia’s first on-vehicle truck weighing system in 1976, giving drivers a way to measure axle loads and gross weight before leaving the mill.
The system revolutionised compliance in the Tasmanian forestry industry, reducing overloading and introducing one of the earliest applications of Chain of Responsibility principles—well before such laws existed.
Reflecting on the era, Graeme recalled: “Vehicle overloading was prevalent. One of the biggest problems for truck operators was accurately estimating the weight of their load. For the first time, logging transport had entered a new level of professionalism, with far fewer roadside weighbridge violations and drivers finally enjoying peace of mind as they now had a legal load.”
Landmark Achievements
Graeme’s legacy is marked by a steady stream of Australian and world-firsts, including:
- 1976: Australia’s first onboard weighing system.
- 1980: Stretch mudguard design, now standard across the industry.
- 1983: World’s first self-loading road train.
- 1985: The award-winning Tri-Beam suspension system.
- 1986: World’s first folding skeletal trailer, the Fold-A-Skel™.
- 1988: Early B-double trailer configuration.
- 1989: Easyweigh™ wireless remote indicator system.
- 2005–2007: World’s first self-loading B-Triple and road-train double trailers.
- 2008: Easyloader™ Long Logger, PBS-approved to carry 19-metre logs on a 26-metre B-double.
- 2011–2013: Easysteer™ self-steering suspension.
These designs improved safety, efficiency and compliance across the sector, many of them now standard features in heavy vehicle operations nationwide.
Recognition and Legacy
Industry bodies, including the Tasmanian Transport Association, have previously commended Graeme’s impact, noting that “his pioneering work, such as Australia’s first onboard weighing systems, has left an indelible mark on the industry”.
Accepting his induction, Graeme said: “I’m truly humbled to be inducted into the Wall of Fame alongside so many legends of the road. I’ve always just tried to solve problems and make trucks, trailers and transport in general safer and more efficient for everyone. To have those efforts recognised by the industry I love is an incredible honour.”
His son, Grant Elphinstone, General Manager of Elphinstone Weighing Systems, added: “Dad has always been a trailblazer. He was fitting onboard scales before most people knew such a thing existed. His focus has always been on making life easier and safer for drivers – and that’s why this recognition is so deserved.”
