Scania Australia is using the launch of its new Super 11-litre engine to challenge traditional thinking in distribution prime movers, with a new 430 P 6×2 prime mover aimed at operators looking to reduce fuel consumption without compromising performance.
The truck was part of Scania’s Australian launch program for the Super 11 engine family, which has been developed for regional haulage, construction and distribution applications where uptime, fuel efficiency and productivity are central to the operating model.
For Scania, the 430 P 6×2 prime mover is about matching the truck to the task. Rather than defaulting to a 6×4 configuration, Scania is positioning the 6×2 as a smarter solution for supermarket work, regional distribution and freeway running where two driven axles are not always required.
Ben Nye, Sales Director – Trucks at Scania Australia, said the logic is simple.
“Why do we need a six-by-four for doing distribution supermarket drop-off?” Nye said at the launch. “Why do we need two axles driven?”
A lighter 11-litre option with 430 hp
The 430 P prime mover is powered by Scania’s DC11 102 Euro 6e engine, a 10.62-litre five-cylinder inline diesel producing 430 hp, or 316 kW, at 1,800 rpm.
The engine delivers 2,200 Nm of torque from 950 rpm to 1,360 rpm, giving the truck strong low-rev performance for distribution and regional work.
The Super 11 engine family sits between Scania’s 9-litre and 13-litre engine platforms. It is 85 kg lighter than the Super 13-litre six-cylinder engine, shares 85 per cent parts commonality with the larger Super engine, and delivers up to seven per cent improved fuel efficiency compared with Scania’s 9-litre five-cylinder engine.
That combination gives fleets a lighter and more efficient option while still offering the torque required for demanding freight tasks.
Why 6×2 matters
The key point of difference in the 430 P prime mover is the 6×2 configuration.
In a traditional 6×4 prime mover, both rear axles are driven. In Scania’s 6×2 setup, only one rear axle is driven, reducing driveline losses by removing the need to power a second drive axle.
Nye said the benefit is fuel.
“The biggest change is fuel,” he said. “Not running a power divider, not running a second tailshaft, not running a second diff, it makes so much sense.”
The truck uses a load transfer system that keeps 60 per cent of the load on the drive axle to minimise wheel slip. There is also a driver-operated function that can transfer air from the tag axle to the drive axle in low-speed situations, such as steep driveways, spoon drains or difficult access points.
Nye said the system is designed for the real operating conditions faced by distribution fleets.
“There’s also a button that you can press that, if you were in a situation where there is a large spoon drain or a steep driveway, you can remove the air from the tag and push it into the drive to push it down,” he said.
Built for supermarket and distribution work
The 430 P 6×2 prime mover is intended for applications where operators want the comfort, safety and efficiency of a Scania, but do not need the weight and fuel penalty of a 6×4 driveline.
That makes it a potential fit for supermarket distribution, metropolitan and regional freight, shuttle work and linehaul tasks where the vehicle spends most of its time on sealed roads.
For fleets running repetitive routes, the fuel-saving opportunity can become significant over time. Combined with Scania’s Super 11 engine efficiency, the 6×2 configuration gives operators another way to reduce whole-of-life operating costs.
G25 Opticruise transmission
The prime mover is fitted with Scania’s G25CM1 Opticruise gearbox.
The transmission offers 14 forward gears, made up of 12 standard gears, one super-crawler and one overdrive. It also provides up to eight reverse gears, Opticruise automated shifting and Eco-Roll.
Scania Opticruise driving modes include Economy, Standard and Power.
The truck has a rear axle ratio of 2.92:1, supporting low-rev cruising and fuel-efficient operation.
The driveline is also supported by Scania’s Variable Valve Brake, rated at 234/344 kW, giving the driver additional braking support in regional and distribution work.
Safety and driver assistance
Scania has equipped the 430 P 6×2 prime mover with a broad safety and driver assistance package.
Standard features include Electronic Stability System, Traction Control, Adaptive Cruise Control with Active Prediction, Hill Hold, Differential Lock, Advanced Emergency Braking and an electropneumatic parking brake.
The ADAS package includes Lane Departure Warning with Active Steering, Lane Keep Assist, Lane Change Collision Prevention, and Vulnerable Road User Collision Warning using front and left-side radar.
The truck also includes driver and passenger seat belt pretensioners, driver airbag, and driver and passenger side curtain airbags.
For fleets operating in busy distribution centres, supermarket docks and urban roads, these features are designed to support both driver safety and protection for vulnerable road users.
Cab comfort for longer shifts
The 430 P prime mover uses Scania’s CP20 normal-roof cab, fitted with a bunk and 800 mm mattress. It also includes electronic cab tilt, a 25 cm roof air deflector and 53 cm side air deflectors.
The cab is finished in Phantom White with Glossy Steel Grey grille inserts.
Inside, the truck includes automatic climate control air conditioning, DAB audio, Bluetooth, CB radio, USB charging and Medium-style driver and passenger seats with woven upholstery. The driver’s seat is air suspended.
The specification reflects the type of work the truck is aimed at: distribution and regional operations where drivers may spend long days in the vehicle and need a comfortable, well-equipped workplace.
Fuel and emissions options
The Super 11 engine family is HVO compatible across all variants, giving fleets a renewable fuel option where supply is available.
The 430 hp version used in the prime mover also supports B100 compatibility, giving operators another lower-emission fuel pathway where biodiesel is available and suitable for the operation.
The truck carries 355 litres of fuel on the left side and 285 litres on the right side, supported by a 105-litre AdBlue tank.
The emission system uses Scania SCR, DPF and a twin AdBlue dosing system, while the engine uses Scania XPI Extra High-Pressure Injection.

A practical alternative to 6×4
The Scania 430 P Super 11-litre 6×2 prime mover gives distribution fleets a different way to think about prime mover specification.
Rather than carrying the weight and friction of a second driven rear axle for work that may not require it, the 6×2 setup is designed to deliver the traction needed for normal distribution work while improving fuel efficiency.
With 430 hp, 2,200 Nm of torque, a lighter Super 11 engine, G25 Opticruise transmission, load transfer system and a comprehensive safety package, the truck is aimed at fleets that want a more efficient prime mover for metropolitan and regional freight.
For Scania, the 430 P 6×2 is another example of how the Super 11 engine will help the brand expand into new Australian fleet applications.
As Nye put it, Scania is looking to evolve into new markets. With the new Super 11 prime mover, that evolution is aimed directly at distribution fleets looking for lower running costs without giving up performance, safety or driver comfort.
