Heavy vehicle operators are facing growing safety and cost pressures, with driver shortages, long shifts, and rising incident rates placing added strain on both businesses and drivers. In response, Geotab has launched the GO Focus Plus AI dash cam – a new tool designed to support heavy vehicle fleets with proactive, real-time driver coaching.
The dual-facing camera integrates with Geotab’s video intelligence platform, giving heavy vehicle drivers instant voice prompts to correct risky behaviours before they escalate. Early trials have shown a 90% reduction in tailgating and a 95% cut in mobile phone use, highlighting its potential to prevent costly accidents and improve driver well-being.
Industry Context
The safety focus comes at a time when road trauma is rising. The Bureau of Infrastructure and Transport Research Economics recorded 1,329 road deaths from June 2024 to June 2025, up 3.3% from the year before. For heavy vehicle operators, the risks are magnified by vehicle size, load requirements, and demanding schedules.
Geotab’s own survey also revealed that one in three drivers had considered leaving the industry in the past year, citing long hours, stress, and unfair blame for incidents. These are issues that directly affect retention and add cost pressures for operators already stretched by compliance demands and tight margins.
“Our new video intelligence platform is designed to make things easier, not harder, by delivering proactive coaching and practical insights right when they’re needed most,” said Fernando Ferreira, Associate Vice President, Safety Solutions, Asia Pacific and Latin America at Geotab.
What It Means for Heavy Vehicle Fleets
Unlike traditional dash cams that simply record footage, the GO Focus Plus provides in-cab voice feedback to correct behaviour in real time. For fleet managers, the AI system identifies the most urgent risks and repeat patterns, avoiding the need to trawl through hours of video.
Sean Killen, Vice President, Global Markets at Geotab, said the technology was designed to support fleets under increasing pressure:
“With the GO Focus Plus AI dash cam, we’re combining Geotab’s connected vehicle insights with intelligent, in-cab coaching to give drivers instant support exactly when they need it. At the same time, fleet managers get the tools to foster a culture of safety that feels supportive rather than punitive.”
Key Benefits for Heavy Vehicle Operators
- Proactive Coaching for High-Risk Scenarios – such as fatigue, tailgating, and distraction.
- Faster Safety Reviews – AI highlights priority risks with supporting video and data.
- Integration with MyGeotab – enabling managers to assign coaching, track outcomes, and recognise safe driving behaviours.
Continuous Development
Geotab’s AI platform will continue to evolve, with updates refining detection and reducing false alerts. Its open architecture also supports a growing range of advanced cameras, ensuring heavy vehicle fleets can stay ahead of risk without adding administrative workload.
For heavy transport operators, this development represents more than just another piece of technology. It’s a step towards building safer workplaces, protecting drivers from unfair blame, and reducing downtime caused by preventable incidents – all critical to keeping freight moving safely and efficiently.
