IVECO has strengthened its alternative fuel offering in Australia by confirming that renewable diesel compatibility now extends across almost its entire commercial vehicle line-up, giving fleet operators another pathway to reduce emissions without changing vehicle technology.
The announcement means that the IVECO Daily Van and Cab Chassis fitted with the FIC 3.0-litre 180EVID engine now joins the manufacturer’s medium and heavy-duty truck range in supporting Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO), also known as renewable diesel.
Produced from waste vegetable oils and animal fats, HVO is chemically similar to conventional diesel and can be used as a direct replacement in compatible engines. The fuel offers significantly lower lifecycle CO₂ emissions while also reducing methane and NOx emissions, making it an attractive option for transport operators looking to lower their environmental impact using existing diesel infrastructure.
IVECO Trucks Australia Head of Product and Customer Innovation Centre Andrew Winbanks said the expanded compatibility gives fleet operators greater flexibility as renewable fuels become more widely available.
“The use of HVO in compatible IVECO vehicles will not negatively impact engine life, service intervals, durability or performance; nor will the fuel affect after treatment systems, and warranties remain unchanged,” said Winbanks.
For fleet managers, the development provides another practical option for reducing transport emissions without investing in new powertrain technology or modifying existing vehicles. It also allows organisations with sustainability targets to begin lowering emissions while continuing to operate proven diesel-powered assets.
Although HVO supply in Australia remains relatively limited and is currently accessed primarily through bulk commercial arrangements, Winbanks noted that industry investment is increasing.
“While availability of HVO is currently limited and predominantly accessed through bulk commercial arrangements, leading industry players such as Viva Energy are looking to increase supply through additional importation and more local processing.”
The announcement reflects IVECO’s broader multi-energy strategy, which supports a range of technologies including renewable diesel, natural gas, biomethane, battery electric and hydrogen powertrains rather than relying on a single pathway to decarbonisation.
For heavy vehicle fleets, HVO presents an opportunity to achieve immediate emissions reductions while maintaining familiar operating practices, existing refuelling processes and vehicle performance. As renewable fuel availability improves across Australia, compatibility from manufacturers such as IVECO could make HVO an increasingly viable transition fuel for freight, construction and municipal fleets.
Fleet operators wanting to confirm whether specific vehicles are approved for HVO use are encouraged to contact their local IVECO dealer.
