Microlise APAC has achieved a major milestone, obtaining type-approval from Transport Certification Australia (TCA) for its flagship telematics device, the SmartGateway 14. The approval places Microlise among just 15 recognised suppliers across Australia and New Zealand to meet the rigorous standards of the National Telematics Framework.
TCA is the government-appointed authority responsible for independently assessing telematics hardware and systems. Devices are measured against strict performance specifications to ensure accuracy, reliability, security, and integrity—criteria that give transport operators confidence in technology that increasingly underpins compliance, safety, and productivity.
Luke Olsen, Managing Director at Microlise APAC, said the achievement will help operators navigate a crowded market of more than 100 telematics providers.
“We’re incredibly proud to achieve TCA type-approval. This recognition helps transport operators make informed choices and reinforces our commitment to supporting safer and more efficient transport across Australia and New Zealand.”
The type-approval also allows Microlise to pursue certification for use in key applications such as the Road Infrastructure Management (RIM), Telematics Monitoring Application (TMA), and Smart On-Board Mass (OBM) systems. These applications are important tools for heavy vehicle operators working under the Heavy Vehicle National Law (HVNL), overseen by the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR). The NHVR’s role is to enforce compliance and improve safety outcomes for the more than one million registered heavy vehicles in Australia.
During Microlise’s Road Ahead executive roadshow, Gavin Hill, General Manager of Strategic Engagement and Performance at Austroads, presented the official certificate of approval. He described the recognition as a significant endorsement:
“Only 14 other providers have met the rigorous standards required for TCA to grant type-approval. Type-approval signals Microlise is serious about supporting operators with technology they can trust.”
For operators, this means Microlise’s SmartGateway 14 can now be deployed with confidence for use in compliance and productivity programs that demand high levels of data integrity. The move also aligns with Microlise’s broader strategy of strengthening its footprint in the APAC market and supporting government and industry efforts to make heavy vehicle transport safer and more efficient.
