Hino Motors has unveiled the Hino Profia Z FCV, Japan’s first mass-produced fuel cell heavy-duty truck, marking a major milestone in the global transition toward zero-emission freight transport.
Developed jointly with Toyota Motor Corporation, the new model is based on Hino’s proven heavy-duty Profiaplatform (known in Australia as the 700 Series) and will go on sale in Japan from 24 October 2025.
Designed to meet the unique packaging and load requirements of hydrogen-powered trucks, the Profia Z FCV integrates a purpose-built chassis to optimise payload capacity while housing key hydrogen components.
Its powertrain features two Toyota MIRAI fuel cell stacks, adapted specifically for heavy-duty commercial use, paired with Hino’s advanced drive control systems.
Refuelling with hydrogen takes just 15–30 minutes, while a fully loaded vehicle achieves a driving range of around 650 kilometres — offering fleet operators the long-haul performance they expect from diesel, with zero tailpipe emissions.
The launch follows an extensive trial program involving multiple vehicles operating in live customer freight environments in Japan.
“Globally, Hino is aiming to achieve carbon neutrality – in Japan, the domestic freight fleet accounts for 60% of CO₂ emissions, with heavy-duty vehicles a significant contributor,” said Richard Emery, Hino Australia President and CEO.
“As we move towards carbon neutrality, it’s important to adopt a multi-pathway approach to ensure we have the most suitable powertrains for various applications. Fuel cell vehicles are well-suited to heavy-duty trucks in long-distance transport, offering the cruising range, payload capacity, and fast refuelling operators need.”
Hino’s global portfolio already includes the long-running 300 Series Hybrid Electric, which has been in Australian fleets for over 18 years, and the Dutro Z EV battery-electric light-duty truck now undergoing local trials. The company is also evaluating the Profia (700 Series) Hybrid for Australian conditions.
“The Hino Profia Z FCV is yet another innovative Hino solution that Hino Australia will consider for the local market,” Mr Emery concluded.
