Australia Post has taken two major steps toward low-emission freight, unveiling its first heavy-duty electric truck and entering a renewable diesel partnership with Ampol.
The new Mercedes-Benz eActros, built by Daimler Truck, marks the first large electric truck to join Australia Postâs national fleet. Designed for urban and regional routes, the eActros produces zero tailpipe emissions, offers advanced safety systems, and provides a quieter, more efficient driving experience.
Australia Post General Manager Network Assets and Implementation Mitch Buxton said the trial will help the organisation understand how battery-electric trucks can be integrated into operations.
âTrialling the eActros will give us valuable insights into how heavy-duty electric vehicles can perform across our network,â he said. âWeâve been investing in electric delivery vehicles for more than a decade, and this is the next step in building a cleaner, smarter and more resilient fleet for the future.â
He acknowledged that challenges remain around charging, range, and load capacity but said the organisation is âexcited to take them on.â
At the same time, Australia Post announced a new partnership with Ampol to supply five million litres of Amplify Diesel R10 â a 10 per cent renewable diesel blend â to its Redbank Parcel Facility in Brisbane. The fuel will be used across 89 existing trucks without engine modifications, reducing lifecycle emissions immediately.
Ampol General Manager B2B Brad Phillips said renewable diesel offers a practical pathway for decarbonisation in transport.
âRenewable diesel has the potential to lower fuel lifecycle emissions as itâs manufactured from renewable feedstocks such as canola or waste products, and is a logical solution for hard-to-abate industries where fleet or infrastructure changes are not required,â he said.
Together, the initiatives highlight Australia Postâs multi-solution approach to reducing emissions across one of the countryâs largest and most diverse transport fleets.
âWe know thereâs no single path to decarbonising a fleet of our size and scale,â Mr Buxton said. âThatâs why weâre exploring a range of cleaner alternatives â from electric vehicles to renewable diesel â to find the best mix to support the size of our operations. Each step helps us learn, adapt and keep driving on our path to target net zero emissions by 2050.â
The dual rollout underlines the steady evolution of Australia Postâs fleet strategy â combining technology trials with scalable fuel solutions that deliver immediate carbon savings while preparing for a broader electric transition.
