The Northern Territory Fire and Rescue Service has unveiled a new fire appliance as part of its ongoing fleet replacement program, with the vehicle designed to strengthen frontline response capability across urban, regional and remote communities.
The new appliance, built by Fraser Fire and Rescue on a Volvo cab chassis, was revealed at AFAC in Melbourne and will join the NT Fire and Rescue Service fleet as the organisation continues to modernise its emergency response vehicles.
The investment reflects the operational demands placed on fire and emergency services in the Territory, where crews can be required to respond across large distances and in challenging conditions.
For fleet operators in emergency services, vehicle replacement decisions need to balance reliability, safety, capability and the operational requirements of the crews using the equipment.
Focus on firefighter safety and readiness
Northern Territory Fire and Emergency Services Commissioner Andrew Warton said dependable appliances were essential to maintaining frontline capability.
“This investment strengthens the Northern Territory Fire and Rescue Service’s ability to protect communities across the Territory, now and into the future.”
“Modern, dependable appliances are critical to maintaining operational readiness and ensuring our firefighters can respond safely and effectively to increasingly complex and more frequent emergencies.”
“Through our partnership with Fraser Fire and Rescue and Volvo, we are delivering the capability our crews need to protect life, property, and the environment across urban, regional and remote communities.”
The new vehicle forms part of a broader replacement program aimed at ensuring firefighters have access to modern equipment suited to the Territory’s operating environment.
Volvo chassis underpins new appliance
Cameron Bettany, Vice President Governmental Sales at Volvo Group Australia, said the manufacturer was focused on supporting the operational requirements of emergency services.
“We are proud to support the Northern Territory Fire Service with vehicles designed to perform in demanding environments. Volvo’s reputation is built on safety, reliability and durability, and we are honored to contribute to the protection of NT communities and the firefighters who serve them.”
The choice of cab chassis is an important part of emergency vehicle procurement because the base vehicle needs to support the specialised body, equipment and operating requirements added during the appliance build.

Fraser continues NT relationship
Fraser Fire and Rescue General Manager Martin Simpson said the latest appliance continues the company’s relationship with the NT Fire and Rescue Service.
“Fraser Fire and Rescue have a long and proud relationship supporting NT Fire and Rescue Service and its operations with state-of-the-art, latest generation firefighting vehicles. We are pleased to continue that support through this next step, helping ensure crews have the capability they need to respond effectively.”
Simpson said Fraser was also investing in its manufacturing capability as emergency services continue to evolve their fleet requirements.
“We are continuing to invest in new production technologies and equipment to ensure we are well positioned to deliver for fire services into the future. Our focus is on providing high-quality, purpose-built vehicles that meet the demands of modern emergency response.”
The latest appliance highlights the specialised nature of emergency service fleet management, where vehicles must remain ready for immediate deployment while meeting demanding requirements around safety, reliability, equipment integration and whole-of-life performance.
For the NT Fire and Rescue Service, the new Volvo-based appliance will add another modern vehicle to the frontline fleet as its replacement program continues.
