Scania will supply 27 biogas-powered buses for regional passenger services in southern Sweden, with transport operator Nobina set to place the vehicles into service for public transport authority Skånetrafiken.
The new buses will operate on routes linking Malmö, Lund and Kristianstad, supporting Skånetrafiken’s continuing investment in lower-emission public transport.
The vehicles will be Scania Irizar i4 models, bodied by Spanish coachbuilder Irizar. It will be the first time the i4 has entered public transport service in Sweden, although the model is already used in several European markets.
Designed for longer regional journeys, the buses will feature coach-style seating, toilets and additional passenger comfort features. Scania says the compressed biogas powertrain will also help reduce noise levels compared with conventional diesel-powered buses.
Biogas is produced from waste streams and is positioned as a renewable fuel option that can reduce transport emissions while improving local fuel security. Much of Sweden’s compressed biogas supply is produced domestically, keeping fuel production and economic activity closer to where it is used.
Nobina Fleet Manager Helena Ericson said the operator was focused on both sustainability and practical fleet outcomes.
“Sustainability is important to us, and the vehicles should also be easy to own,” Ericson said. “This is important for our drivers, our passengers, and for our mission to deliver reliable transport every day.”
The agreement expands Scania’s biogas bus presence in the Skåne region, where renewable fuels are already an established part of the public transport mix.
Scania Sverige Key Account Manager Rutger Hörndahl said the new buses were suited to regional passenger operations, combining lower noise with comfort and efficiency.
“Biogas is a circular and locally produced solution that provides great climate benefits here and now,” Hörndahl said.
Delivery and commissioning of the fleet will be completed with support from Irizar’s Swedish representative, LECAB Lastbilar AB.
The order highlights the continued role renewable gas can play in decarbonising regional passenger transport, particularly in markets where local biogas production and refuelling infrastructure are already established.
