Driving for work remains one of the most significant workplace safety risks in Australia. To support organisations in managing this risk, the National Road Safety Partnership Program (NRSPP) has developed a comprehensive Work Driving Road Safety Tool Box Talk package designed for Team Leaders, Managers and Facilitators.
Why focus on work driving?
The NRSPP fact sheet highlights the scale of the issue:
- Work-related driving incidents account for up to 33% of all road fatalities in Australia
- From 2003–2016, 3,414 workers lost their lives in work-related incidents, with two-thirds involving vehicles
- In 2016 alone, 54% of worker fatalities involved a vehicle
The poster reinforces this stark message and asks a critical question: Work Driving – Are you at risk?
Research consistently shows that common crash types in fleet operations include reversing, rear-end collisions, road condition-related crashes, loss of control, animal strikes, and damage while parked.
What’s included in the Tool Box Talk package?
The NRSPP Work Driving Road Safety kit provides a structured, practical framework to run short, effective safety discussions (typically 15–20 minutes). It includes:
- Facilitator guidance on how to lead productive discussions
- Topic background information and research-based fact sheets
- Discussion prompt sheets with guided questions
- Attendance record templates (supporting WHS documentation requirements)
- Participant self-assessment tools
- Discussion review sheets
- A downloadable safety poster
- Supporting PowerPoint slides
A shared responsibility
Under Work Health and Safety legislation, a vehicle used for work is considered a workplace. Organisations operating fleets — including grey fleets — have a duty to ensure the safety of workers on the road. At the same time, employees must comply with road rules, follow organisational safety policies and take reasonable care to protect themselves and others.
The resources encourage practical prevention strategies, including:
- Prioritising work driving safety
- Identifying and addressing risky driving behaviours
- Conducting pre-start checks
- Complying with speed and fatigue management laws
- Reporting incidents and vehicle issues
The participant self-assessment component helps drivers reflect on their own behaviour and identify potential risk patterns before they result in serious incidents.
Turning discussion into action
One of the strengths of the NRSPP Tool Box Talk approach is its emphasis on discussion-based learning. Evidence referenced in the facilitator guide shows that structured group discussion can be one of the most effective and cost-efficient interventions for reducing crash involvement.
Rather than simply delivering information, the program encourages teams to:
- Identify organisation-specific risks
- Share real-world experiences
- Develop practical improvements
- Reinforce accountability at all levels
Because every worker deserves to return home safely at the end of the day.
