Mack Trucks Australia has launched a full range of new Euro 6 drivetrains to improve performance and efficiency, along with an impressive list of standard safety features and interior improvements.
With events occurring across the Mack Dealer network, Fleet HV News were invited along with Mack customers to an event at the VCV Newcastle dealership to learn about these new features and take a couple of their latest Trucks for a run around Newcastle.
The Mack Super-Liner has held the title for Australia’s most powerful conventional truck for over a decade, and these latest Euro 6 powertrains will continue their dominance for years to come with the range topping 17-litre MP11 now delivering 780 hp of power and an impressive 3,800 Nm of torque.
The new Euro 6 engines all benefit from new low friction cylinder liners, wave top pistons and a more fuel efficient turbocharger along with revised electronics to provide more precise fuel delivery and combustion.
Tom Welsh, Mack Australia’s Senior Product Manager, runs through all of the latest Mack Truck improvements at an early morning briefing session in the VCV Newcastle Dealership which is conveniently located at the end of the M1 in Beresfield; ‘These new Euro 6 engines have been in development and testing for a number of years now, and we are excited to be launching them to the Australian market this year.’
The largest of the Mack Engines, the 17-Litre MP11, comes in three power ratings of 600 Hp, 700 Hp and the range topping 780 Hp. With updated VGT turbocharger and exhaust brakes, an updated CAC system and improved cooling, the new drivetrain provides an even more fuel efficient truck with improved drivability too.
“The torques curves are really impressive with these new engines, which are smoother and more usable than before. In the 600 Hp setting, the 17-litre produces 3,000 Nm of torque from 900 to 1,400 rpm, the 700 Hp unit produces 3,400 Nm from 960 to 1,400 rpm, whilst the 780 Hp unit produces 3,800 Nm of torque from 1,000 to 1,200 rpm,” Welsh adds.
Below the 17-litre sits the 13-litre eSCR Euro 6 MP8 unit which again comes in three ratings. Starting with 435 Hp of power and 2,200 Nm or torque, 500 Hp and 2,500 Nm, to 535 Hp and 1,400 Nm between 1,000 to 1,400 rpm.
“We are really excited by the Mack Anthem’s potential now as a fuel efficiency champion on the highway with the arrival of the new MP8HE (High Efficiency) engine platform. The MP8HE utilises turbo compound technology to gain extra energy from the engine’s exhaust flow to transfer that power directly to the engine crankshaft. This gives 2,800 Nm torque at 500 Hp which is significantly higher than the standard Mack MP8 engine,” Welsh explained.
“This improves the fuel economy by 3 to 4% over the eSCR engine, whilst using the same amount of AdBlue as a Euro 5 engine of 4 to 5% which is a perfect fit for Linehaul B-Double operations.”
Coupled to the improved engines, Mack Australia has also worked on improving the already impressive MDrive with a new Multicore Mirco-controller which gives faster and smoother gear shifting, whilst retaining the same weight and size to meet the same GCW approvals.
Other improvements being released at the same time include the 2nd generation of the Bendix Wingman Fusion with Automated Emergency braking (AEB) which covers situations such as Highway departure, Multi Lane braking, Stationary vehicle avoidance, Lane departure warnings, and adaptive cruise control.
“The factory fitted infotainment system really improves the driver’s experience which now comes with Apple and Android car play, wireless charging, a reverse camera and USB-A connection,” states Welsh.
“We have also fitted a six camera safety harness ready for connection to a range of cameras that drivers want these days, such as one on the hood, down the sides of the truck, rear and also across multi trailers if required.”
For the comfort, Mack Australia has improved the living quarters with a fully integrated 70-inch, walk-through sleeper for the Euro 6 Super-Liner and Titan trucks. These come with single and double bunk designs, with the main bed being a king single mattress and plenty of storage for all of the creature comforts any modern driver needs.
The next opportunity to experience the 780Hp Euro 6 engine as part of the VCV Mack Roadshow is in Brisbane on 2nd and 3rd of September. Click here to book your place at this VIP experience.
