Scania Australia is using the launch of its new Super 11-litre engine to strengthen its offer in waste, construction and vocational work, with a new 350 P 6×4 hook lift truck fitted with a Hyva Lift hook loader.
The truck was one of the application-specific vehicles driven during the Australian launch of the Super 11 engine family, which has been developed for regional haulage, construction and distribution work with a focus on uptime and fuel efficiency.
For Scania, the 350 P hook lift is part of a broader push into new markets where the brand sees opportunities to grow beyond its traditional linehaul and emergency vehicle strengths.
Ben Nye, Sales Director – Trucks at Scania Australia, said the new engine gives Scania more flexibility to compete in different vocational applications.
“Scania has always been known as the long-haulage, highway line-haul truck, as well as the fire truck, but we need to survive, and we need to evolve,” Nye said at the launch.
“For us to evolve, we need to go into uncharted territory, and uncharted territory means new applications.”
A Super 11 for hook lift work
The 350 P hook lift is powered by Scania’s DC11 100 Euro 6e engine, a 10.62-litre five-cylinder inline diesel producing 350 hp, or 257 kW, at 1,800 rpm.
The engine delivers 1,800 Nm of torque from 950 rpm to 1,360 rpm, giving the truck strong low-speed performance for heavy bins, site work, urban routes and stop-start vocational duty cycles.
The Super 11 engine sits between Scania’s 9-litre and 13-litre engine families. It is 85 kg lighter than the Super 13-litre six-cylinder engine, shares 85 per cent parts commonality with the larger Super engine, and delivers up to seven per cent improved fuel efficiency compared with Scania’s 9-litre five-cylinder engine.
For hook lift operators, the combination of lower weight, strong torque and improved fuel efficiency is designed to support productivity across demanding daily operations.
Nye said fuel use has become a much more visible cost for waste and vocational fleets.
“Current market conditions have pushed operating costs to be absolute front-of-mind for all truck users,” Nye said. “Everyone is seeking greater efficiency, greater uptime and greater productivity from their vehicles.”
Hyva hook loader body
The Scania 350 P 6×4 hook lift displayed and driven at launch was fitted with a Hyva Lift 16-53S hook loader.
The body specification includes 16-tonne capacity, bin length capability from 4,100 mm to 6,400 mm, and an 81-litre hydraulic oil tank.
This gives the truck a practical specification for waste, recycling, construction, council, landscape, industrial and skip-bin operations where flexibility and body strength are central to the business case.
The 6×4 configuration provides traction for work sites and loaded bin movements, while the Super 11 engine helps Scania keep weight and fuel consumption in focus.
G25 Opticruise transmission
The 350 P hook lift uses Scania’s G25CM1 Opticruise gearbox.
The transmission provides 14 forward gears, made up of 12 standard gears, one super-crawler and one overdrive. It also offers up to eight reverse gears, automated Opticruise shifting and Eco-Roll.
Scania Opticruise drive modes include Economy, Standard and Power.
At the launch, Nye said Scania had developed the G25 gearbox for the 11-litre engine and had created specific programs for waste and concrete work.
“We have developed programs for this G25 for waste and for concrete, which changes shift mapping, clutch actuations, and a few other things,” he said.
For hook lift operators, this is important because the truck needs to perform across varied operating conditions, from tight depots and transfer stations to construction sites, suburban streets and regional routes.
Safety built into the truck
Hook lift trucks often work in busy sites, near pedestrians, contractors, loaders, light vehicles and other plant. Scania has equipped the 350 P hook lift with a broad safety package.
Standard equipment includes Electronic Stability System, Traction Control, Adaptive Cruise Control with Active Prediction, Hill Hold, Differential Lock, Advanced Emergency Braking and an electropneumatic parking brake.
The ADAS package includes Lane Keep Assist, Lane Departure Warning with Active Steering, Lane Change Collision Prevention, Vulnerable Road User Collision Warning using front and side radar, and Blind Spot Warning.
The truck also includes driver and passenger seat belt pretensioners, driver airbag, and driver and passenger side curtain airbags.
Nye said safety is a major part of the pitch when Scania moves into waste and vocational applications.
“To be successful in waste, it is safety, it is entry and egress, it is tare weight, it is forward vision, and it is fuel consumption,” he said. “They are the main drivers for any waste company right now.”
Cab and driver features
The 350 P hook lift uses Scania’s CP17 low-roof cab with electronic cab tilt system. The vehicle displayed at launch was finished in Phantom White with Glossy Steel Grey grille inserts.
Cab features include climate control air conditioning, LED headlamps, tail-lights and daytime running lights, DAB audio, Bluetooth, CB radio and USB charging.
The driver and passenger seats are Medium style with woven upholstery, while the driver’s seat has air suspension.
For operators trying to retain drivers in demanding waste and vocational roles, comfort, visibility and safety are becoming increasingly important parts of the vehicle specification.
Lower emissions options
The Super 11 engine family is HVO compatible across all variants, including the 350 hp version used in the hook lift.
B100 compatibility is available on the 390 hp and 430 hp Super 11 engines, while the 350 hp version is compatible with diesel and HVO.
For fleets looking to reduce emissions without changing vehicle operating patterns or installing new infrastructure, HVO compatibility gives operators another pathway where fuel supply is available.
